Controlling SPAM

Controlling SPAM

You're limited in your ability to control SPAM, as different email providers have different rules and restrictions. From our experience, however, it's best that you use your own institute email address (e.g. sisterhood@beth-el123.org) to send your emails from vs. Yahoo and AOL email addresses which seem to be the most problematic (gmail has been less restrictive, i.e. a better option, if you want to go with one of the common email providers).

Some additional best practices to control SPAM:
  1. Initially, send your email to a number of members having at least a few different domains as each email server may flag emails as spam differently. Check Comsend for email "opens". If there are none, try contacting recipients to get a feel if the email arrived in their spam folders.
  1. The more your recipients interact with your emails (opening, clicking, reading) the more likely the emails will end up in inboxes. So send at first to some, but not all members. For example, members with last names beginning with A to D. Try to get a feel from members, see how many opened your email.
  2. If you still feel your email is going to spam for many domains, try changing the content:
  3. Are there any "spammy" keywords or phrases in the body of your email or the email subject? For example, try removing username and password (The auto_url link should be enough).
  4. If there is an image Try removing it or reducing its size.
  5. Even when emails are initially going to spam folders, remember that Cmsend has an efficient way to send reminder emails to those who have not yet participated.
